So often I get caught up on purchasing new things in order to redesign a room, when in reality sometimes the easiest way to freshen up a room is to reorganize. I've been thinking a lot about our dining room and I was originally looking at replacing the bookshelves that we had our dish ware on… but I haven't been able to find something else that I love to replace them at least that's within the price range I'm looking at. The shelves we have are Ikea's Hemnes shelves.
The criteria was find something sturdy, kid safe and not too expensive. So, instead I decided to see what I could do with what I already have. I started by taking everything off of the shelves and placing them on the table. I then attempted to move the glass doors to the middle bookshelf - but it turned out that it didn't have pre-drilled holes for doors. So instead of risking ruining the bookcase (and after one failed attempt at hanging a door in holes I drilled) I decided to keep the doors where they were. Here's a before shot of the shelves.
Before our bookshelves had a lot of different colored items - which made it look very cluttered. In order to create a more cohesive and organized look, I placed only the white dish ware on the shelves. I also added a small metal wine rack to hold our wine bottles - or at least some of them.
I also took the gold/brass chandelier down and spray painted it with Rustoleum's Oil Rubbed Bronze which I had on hand. It looks so much better and was completely free!! You can't beat that!
